To get legal advice, you visit a lawyer; to get medical advice, you go and see a doctor; most people, to get their car repaired, leave it in the hands of a trained professional. Even to get your hair cut, you go to someone who is trained to do that job. In all of these instances, the average consumer, without specific training and resources in a given area, defers to a qualified individual. So what is it about Real Estate that is so different?  ...
Mostly due to high rental costs, and other high cost of living expenses, Toronto now sits atop the list of most expensive cities, as published by Mercer’s global cost-of-living survey.

On an international level, Toronto has jumped upwards to the 59th spot from last year’s 76th position. Vancouver moved up as well, from 75th to 65th place.

Looking at other major Canadian cities, behind Toronto and Vancouver are Montreal and Calgary- followed behind by Ottawa.

This survey looks at 214 different cities across the globe, and tracks things like housing, transport, food, clothing and entertainment, among some 200 items that gauge the comprehensive cost of living in these centres. The report looks at things like price movements, currency fluctuations, and inflation costs in relation to things like food and gas prices.

Internationally, the top five most expensive cities are: Luanda, Angola, Tokyo, Japan, N'Djamena, Chad, Moscow, Russia, and Geneva, Switzerland. The least expensive city, for the second year in a row is Karachi, Pakistan.

This survey is intended as a tool for multi-national corporations to try to assess costs of living for expatriates.
